Dust looks harmless, but in a data centre it is an active threat. It does damage in four ways at once: thermal, electrical, mechanical and chemical.

It insulates heat

A layer of dust on heat sinks, fans and in airflow paths acts like a blanket. Heat rejection drops, temperatures rise, and cooling has to work harder to achieve the same result.

It conducts current

Much dust contains conductive particles: metal, carbon, zinc whiskers. On circuit boards these can cause short circuits and intermittent faults that are almost impossible to reproduce.

It wears moving parts

Fine particulate works into fan bearings and mechanical drives and accelerates wear. Clogged filters also force fans to spin harder, shortening their life.

It binds moisture and corrosion

Hygroscopic dust holds moisture and corrosive gases against component surfaces, accelerating corrosion. Together, the four effects make dust far more damaging than it appears.
